Each year 36 students are elected in the spring term to join the Student Council and to ensure student views are represented to Queen Mary Students’ Union. The Student Council plays a vital role in gathering feedback from the rest of the student body, debate important issues raised by students, and make recommendations to the Sabbatical Officers and Queen Mary Students’ Union’s Trustee Board. Student Councilors are vital in helping to keep the Student’s Union focused on the needs of the students.
The 36 students are made up of 18 students from the Mile End Campus Board and a further 18 from the BLSA Campus Board. Only medics and dentists are able to be elected to sit on the BLSA Campus Board, and they in turn cannot sit on the Mile End Campus Board. This is because BLSA is a separate division to QMSU; however all the students come together at the Student Council meetings.
The students are all elected by the student body in the spring term and they serve for one year. All the positions are voluntary and the students carry out their roles whilst studying.
