QMSU unveiled its brand new recreational sports initiative GET ACTIVE last Saturday with its Launch Event at Qmotion. Get Active offers students and staff convenient, affordable and low commitment participation opportunities in 10 sports: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Climbing, Cricket, Football, Judo, Netball, Table Tennis and Tennis and is run in partnership with Sport England. All 10 sports were represented at the Launch Event by a series of taster sessions, competitions and demonstrations. The most popular of these proved to be the 10m Mobile climbing wall that was set up in Drapers Square where participants tried their hand at rock climbing.
Competition winners were as follows: Oscar Selfridge won the fastest Tennis serve competition clocking an impressive 103mph. Haris Abbasi topped the scores in the Netball speed passing challenge managing to complete 46 passes in just 30 seconds. In the Basketball Hot Shot Competition Thomas Gross managed to net 33 points to lead all scorers. All competition winners took home a free pair of tickets to Drapers FND School Disco
In addition everyone who attended was entered into a grand prize draw. Queen Mary PhD student Hassan Ali was drawn as the lucky winner of a 19” Toshiba LCD HD Television. Nick Watson and Jordan Beckett were also winners of £25 Amazon vouchers.
QMSU’s Get Active Coordinator Damian Lyons commented “The Launch Event has been a huge success and we have received lots of great feedback from participants. The whole Get Active Team is now really looking forward to moving forward with the programme and getting more staff and students at the university regularly participating in sport.”
Get Active is now up and running offering over 30 turn up and play sessions a week and has intramural leagues starting within the next few weeks. You can get more information on the programme and buy your Get Active tickets from Qmotion reception or by going to www.qmsu.org/getactive
