Queen Mary, University of London Students’ Union has a clear process for reviewing all requested society events, to ensure that we fulfil our duty to promote freedom of speech and the debate of contentious issues.
A recent news report suggested that the Queen Mary ISoc had not followed these procedures, and accused the society of misleading the Union.
This is inaccurate - the report mentioned in the article is an internal briefing document, which provides background information for the Executive Officers when reviewing such requests.
Having reviewed the background briefing, the Union Executive Officers decided that only one speaker, based on previous complaints, was not permitted to speak at the event. They found no evidence that the society had not followed procedures or misled the SU.
