Queen Mary Students' Union Activities
This section of the website should help to give you information about the various activities that you can get involved with as a student at Queen Mary, University of London. As well as Volunteering and Fundraising (dealt with elsewhere on this website), students are also welcome to join one of the 92 student groups that QMSU currently run. We have a wide selection of Sports Clubs and Societies from ABACUS (Association of British and Chinese University Students) to Wu Shu Kwan - we don’t have a Z… yet!
Our student groups offer you an opportunity to meet like-minded people; to socialise, learn a skill or to get fit. With a number of our Sports Clubs there is also the opportunity to play competitive (and sometimes not-so-competitive!) sport in local and national competitions. For a complete list of the groups that we run, along with a brief description and a principle contact, use the link on the left.
The Team
Clubs and Societies are run by students for students, and are supported by a team at QMSU. They are:
• the Vice President Student Activities – Marzan Ahmed, who has been elected to represent the students at Queen Mary University.
• the Sports and Societies Manager – Toby Emmerson, a member of staff with 8 years of professional experience in Student Activities;
• the Sports Officer – Nick Cowell, combining representing the Sports Clubs while continuing his studies;
• the Societies Officer – Satinder “Satty” Singh Dillon, combining representing the Societies while continuing his studies;
Full contact details can be found by following the link on the left hand side.
Membership
Each student group has a membership fee (sometimes called a Subscription or Sub). The majority of Societies cost £5 to join, whereas the Sports Clubs can vary in price. Currently, you can sign up to student groups at Freshers Fair or at the Students' Union. Signing-up procedures may shortly be changing, so watch this space!
Insurance
Once you are a member of your group, you will be insured for all of their activities and be permitted to join in their activities. You will not be allowed to play in any sports fixtures unless you have paid your subs. QMSU provides funding for each group in addition to the money raised through subs.
Can’t find the student group you’re looking for?
If you’ve checked the list of Clubs and Societies and can’t find one that interests you, then you may be able to set up your own group. You are welcome to as long as:
• You have the support of 20 people who want the new group;
• It does not contravene any of the current QMSU aims and objectives;
• It is noticeably different from any existing group;
• The new group is approved by the Student Activity Committee.
If you are interested in setting up a new group, please click here to contact Marzan
BUCS and ULU
The majority of Queen Mary Sports Clubs play in two different competitions. BUCS (previously called BUSA) is British Universities and Colleges Sport, which is the national student competition. Most sports are played in regional leagues on a Wednesday afternoon, but these can lead to national rounds as well. There are also national one-off individual competitions.
To compliment BUCS, QMSU also enter a number of teams in the ULU (University of London Union) leagues. These are regional leagues played between University of London colleges (with a few ‘guest’ teams), the standard can be just as high as BUCS, but is generally a bit more relaxed and flexible.
St Barts and the Royal London Students
All students from Barts and the London are able to join the Clubs and Societies of QMSU. However, there are a number of clubs and societies that are for Barts and the London Students only. These are not listed on this site, but you can find them by following the link to the BLSA site.
