How does your Students' Union work?
Governance simply put is: the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented).
When looking at the current Students’ Union, the highest governing body is the Union General Meeting (UGM). This is a monthly forum where all students can attend and have a say in the way the Student’ Union works. These meetings are essential in ensuring that the Students’ Union continues to put the views of its students first. This is where any issues involving the function and image of the Students’ Union are discussed. Issues for discussion can be presented by any student (after contacting the Union Chair) and decisions made at the meetings have to be carried out.
The next senior body of governance is the Executive Committee. This is a group of democratically elected students who ensure that students and all students are represented in the daily work and decisions of the Students’ Union. They represent a huge variety of students from international to mature in a variety of activities such as sports, entertainment, volunteering and campaigning. These students meet regularly and input into decisions on urgent issues. They also hold sub-committee meetings where they engage with the wider student body and events to help students meet each other develop their skills and affect their local community.
Another key group of individuals that have an impact on governance is theSabbatical Team. This is a group of 5 democratically elected officers, who take a year out of their academic course or after graduating and run the Students’ Union. They are essentially the trustees of the Students’ Union and have the ability to DO what the students want them to do (as indicated at the UGM). They lease with students as well as senior college staff and important external people such as Ministers.
All elected officers are held to account by the UGM, so if you think that they are not representing or that their decisions aren’t representing your view or the view of students, then make sure you have your say by attending the Union General Meetings or contacting the Union Chair on exec.chair@qmsu.org.
