Read about our campaign work in the local community

The remit of the VP Welfare to promote student safety, equality and well being is closely linked to safety in the local area. Acting as a voice of a large student population, and utilising the union’s unique capacity to engage successfully with students is vital in ensuring that positive change is enacted in the local area. Most recently, we have worked on the Save Mile End Campaign (#SaveME) with QM Citizens (A division of London Citizens/Citizens UK) focused solely on improving safety on the Mile End Road. This is in reaction to a series of incidents on the 3km stretch of road, one resulting in the death of a QMUL student. It’s vital that welfare remains engage with local organisations like Tower Hamlets Council when attempting to inform students on matters relating to housing, council tax etc. Welfare also has involvement in widening participation, and we hope to further develop this involvement with youths in the local area into the future.
