SPA Manifesto – Sharafina Binti Razin

Hi everyone! My name is Sharafina Razin and I am a first-year BSc Astrophysics student with a keen interest and motivation to learn about the school and to be the voice of the students.

I’ve had first-hand experience in adapting to a new country with a new environment, as I moved here from Malaysia. The first few months were tough, but I managed to get through it with the amazing student support here at QMUL; and I would like to give back to this school. Thus, one of my main goals as school rep would be to make student support more accessible to everyone in these isolating times.

Another struggle I faced was learning materials online as a first-year student. As school rep, aside from doing all I can to aid a smoother online learning experience, I would also like to encourage more student-led and informal activities. I hope to be able to give students a warm welcome as well as proper guidance to help students navigate their way through their learning resources, all while creating a stronger bond within the school, across the years of study.

Having previously worked as a science experiment facilitator for schoolkids and as an actor, I feel strongly about enriching our learning experience by incorporating subjects like Philosophy, Literature and Performing Arts into Physics. I believe the learning experience in university is all about exploring, and I believe the School of Physics and Astronomy could not only be a learning space, but also a creative space.

I believe students could also benefit from the range of volunteering activities offered by the Students Union, and I would strongly encourage SPA students to involve themselves in such opportunities. Most importantly, I promise to do my best to make SPA a safe space for every student, no matter the race, religion or gender.
