Education is the cure to ignorance.?

Who am I: I'm Finn. I'm studying biomedical science. I am running for the position of Vice President of Communities. I am running because I have experience with many of these issues facing the QMUL community, and whilst I am young, I have had previous experience from prior volunteering/outreach work. I aim to bring clear communication and new focus to the position, with a drive for unrelenting excellence for all community members. I pride myself on being flexible, hardworking and use my communication skills to work in a team to ensure all objectives are completed to the highest standard.

Past experience:

• Teaching adults with severe learning disabilities at the Five Trust charity
• Teaching children with severe learning disabilities how to swim
• Caring for the elderly with severe dementia
• Participating LGBTQ+ awareness and cultural awareness groups at my school

• I have dyslexia and dyspraxia

My vision:

• To identify obstacles, such as signs of discrimination, that are faced by many in the diverse community of QMUL
• To improve awareness for LGBTQ+, disabilities and education of other cultures • To improve Equality Diversity Inclusion (EDI) and understanding of trans and ace members of the community

• To introduce more unisex toilets across campus
• To construct more cultural memorials to a diverse range of academics

How will I achieve these goals:

• Encouraging you to email me to find out what you feel the university is lacking • Helping to make people aware of the diverse community at QMUL through newsletters, emails, and events
• Learning more about our communities and communicating this to QMUL with succinct goals

It's excellent… but: whilst the EDI is extraordinary compared to other university's there could be ways it could still be improved, for example, I have seen a lecturer say the following, "Everyone has extra time therefore extra time is not needed." From a disability's perspective, this is not extra time and is not inclusive to those with disabilities. We should ask ourselves a question "where does this ignorance come from" the answer, in my opinion, is a lack of understanding which can be resolved through education and explaining as well as empathy. Hence, my police revolve around the idea "Education is the cure to ignorance".
