Dental Society Elections - General Secretary

Open to all dental students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook’

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Produce the minutes of various meetings that Dental Society committee members attend, ensuring the distribution of these records amongst the committee members.
  • Act as a regulator for the attendance to meetings and thus monitor attendance.
  • Attend SSLC and DentSoc meetings.
  • Act as the governing body in preparation of Social and Academic events in order to ensure full
  • communication with school’s management. Inform the Student Office
  • Shall be the main point of contact for the Dental Society to provide necessary information when needed.
  • Bitesize Dentistry will now be organized and distributed by the General Secretary, alongside the Vice President.
  • Prepare a brief formal written outcome of meetings every month to be sent to all dental students in order to keep everyone up to date via the DentSoc e-Newsletter.
  • Help develop our online branding and promotional materials
    • 6 newsletter issues throughout the year

Dental Society Elections - Treasurer & External Affairs Officer

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Oversee the finance of the Dental Society and its social events, working closely with the relevant members of the committee
  • Authorise budget and oversee expenditure of the Dental Society with the Dental President.
  • Be responsible for reporting on the finance activity of the Dental Society annually.
  • Produce financial statements when required for the Dental Society expenditure.
  • Have contact with QMSU and BLSA where relevant.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with senior members of committee and social secretaries to regulate budget of the Dental Society.
  • Will now have the added responsibilities of the External Affairs Officer to make financial processes more efficient:
    • To liaise, along with the Dental President, with our current dental company sponsors, trying to increase involvement where possible
    • To communicate with dental companies with the intent of gaining sponsorship for social and academic events within the dental school.
    • To form beneficial relationships and links with various companies
    • To arrange for various companies to attend the Dental Trade Fayres
    • To find local businesses which would be interested in sponsoring the Dental Society

Dental Society Elections - Social Secretary (2 places)

Open to all dental students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook.

Responsibilties:

  • Work as a team to organise and co-ordinate social and academic events.
  • Actively promote events to all Barts and The London students (and to staff members whereappropriate).
  • Liaise regularly with the BLSA ENTS committee to increase medic attendance at events and
  • increase promotion within the school
  • Promote the perception of the Dental Society within the dental school
  • Attend DentSoc to report on the progress of events.
  • Work closely with the Treasurer to sell tickets for events and maximise overall attendance.
  • Work closely with the Social Media Officer to create marketing content for all
  • INTRODUCING Barts and dental school collab events
  • We will work hard to change the Freshers Icebreaker to something more inclusive and entertaining.
  • Work with year reps to increase ticket sales within each year group

Dental Society Elections - Educations Officer

Responsibilities include:

This officer will have the responsibility of organising talks not only to near- by non-selective state schools but schools (16-18 year olds) around London too.

  •  Organise visits where we will give a short presentation on dentistry, studying at Barts, things unique to our school and then holding a workshop to help them with their personal statements, etc...
  •  Create a playlist on our YouTube channel with videos such as: advice about applying to Barts, things about Barts, information of things to do in Whitechapel – aimed for prospective students around the world.

Dental Society Elections - Sport Officer

Responsibilities include:

  • Organise the annual sports day (booking park, pitches)
  • Work with a team to organise this^
  • Start up a Barts Dentsoc Football team, recruiting our best players to go head to head against other Dentsoc teams and to represent us at BDSA Sports day
  • Run bi-weekly training sessions
  • Contact sponsors to provide the team with a new kit
  • Work closely with others to potentially set up a Dentsoc Girls Netball team too

Dental Society Elections - Charities Officer

Responsibilties: 

  • Democratically select a new charity to raise money for next year.
  • All DentSoc Events will have opportunity to raise money for our selected charity and the
  • Charities Officer will be responsible for organising fundraising working alongside the Social Secs.
  • The Charities Officer will arrange a termly money collection day for the homeless people around Whitechapel
  • Working closely with the Media and Marketing Officer - this individual will promote the charities via our social media accounts, and the General Secretary will promote through the DentSoc E-Newsletter
  • We will work hard to try and arrange a new social event: Cultural Food Event and the Charities Officer will be primarily responsible for working to arrange this along with the Social Secretaries and Vice President.
  • The Charities Officer will try to encourage dental students to partake in fundraising activities throughout the year (e.g. Bake Sales and quizzes)

Dental Society Elections - BDA/EDSA Junior Representative

Responsibilities: 

  • Attend BDSA and BDA Student Committee Meetings, expressing the Dental School’s view on current dental issues and changes within the profession.
  • Attend EDSA and IADS meetings, expressing the Dental School’s view on current dental issues and changes within the profession.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with the BDA Senior Rep, EDSA Senior Rep and BDSA Executive Committee.
  • Promote BDSA events within the Dental School and manage the financial side of these events by working closely with the Society Treasurer.
  • Liaise with the organisers of BDSA Events (Conference and Sports Day) ensuring adequate ticket numbers and sales.
  • Promote EDSA events within the Dental School and manage the financial side of these events by working closely with the Society Treasurer.
  • Represent our dental school internationally, attending meetings abroad and within the UK

Dental Society Elections - Social Media Officer

Responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with other members of the DentSoc committee to develop all marketing materials - producing and distributing posters for events as well as promoting events through social media including the DentSoc Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube accounts.
  • Give up-to-date information about website traffic to sponsors whenever needed.
  • Developing video content for the DentSoc website and YouTube channel – will work closely with Widening Participation Officer.
  • Liaise with Dental Society President and Staff President for OSCE Prep videos.
  • Ensure the Dental Society website is kept up-to-date with the activities of Dental Society

Dental Society Elections - Electives Representative

Open to current 3rd year BDS students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook.

This role is only open to current 3rd Year BDS Dentistry Students. 

Responsibilties:

  • Look after external students attending Barts and The London on Elective i.e. introduce them to the appropriate people and ensure their stay is comfortable and enjoyable, both academically and socially.
  • Assign Elective students to different 4th year students and ensure they are comfortable with the group they are in.
  • Look after students attending Barts and The London on the Exchange program. Give them a tour of the Dental School and help them to get familiar with the Dental School, as these students will be treating patients. Ensure that they are making the most of their experience academically and socially.
  • Liaise with the Dental Elective Tutor (Dr Lewis)
  • Convey messages to the 4th year students about upcoming Elective deadlines, and be prepared to answer their queries and monitor their preparation progress
  • Work closely with staff in charge of electives to give adequate guidance to 4th years who are preparing for their electives.

Dental Society Elections - BSc2 Representative

Only open to 1st Year BSc Oral Health Students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook.

Only open to 1st Year BSc Oral Health Students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with 2nd Year Oral Health students and staff and members of SSLC to try and resolve any clinical and academic issues as well as keeping direct contact with director of the oral health course about timetabling, exams, teaching issues.
  • Help integrate oral health students with the dental undergraduates in both academic and social activities.
  • Have regular correspondence with the year via an effective means of communication to update them on requirements that are needed and to inform them of any other key clinical/curriculum matters.
  • Have a positive approach toward your year and be an example to reflect the standard of professionalism that is expected by the School’s management.
  • Feedback concerns and suggestions of oral health students to the Dental Society, to ensure that they are as involved as everyone else in the way the Society is run.

Open to current 1st year BDS Dentistry Students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook.

Responsibilties include: 

  • Liaise with second year students and try to resolve any clinical or academic issues they may have at DentSoc and SSLC meetings.
  • Have a positive approach towards 2nd year dental students and set an example to reflect the standard of professionalism that is expected by the School’s management.
  • Have regular correspondence with the year via an effective means of communication to update them on requirements that are needed and to inform them of any other key clinical/curriculum matters.
  • Communicate well with all course conveners in order to raise awareness about clinical and curricular requirements and reflect these back to 2nd years so students can plan ahead
  • Feedback any concerns or suggestions of 2nd year dental students to the Dental society
  • Promote events the Dental Society are holding and sell tickets to the year
  • Liaise with the Treasurer reach out to the Oral-B rep to arrange a date for Oral-B to come in and give a talk to 2nd years (free Oral-B electric toothbrushes!)

Responsibilties include: 

  • Liaise with all third-year students and try to resolve any clinical or academic issues they may have at DentSoc and SSLC meetings.
  • Have a positive approach towards 3rd year students and set an example to reflect the standard of professionalism that is expected by the School’s management.
  • Have regular correspondence with the year via an effective means of communication to update them on requirements that are needed and to inform them of any other key clinical/curriculum matters.
  • Communicate well with all course conveners in order to raise awareness about clinical and curricular requirements and reflect these back to 3rd years so that students can plan ahead.
  • Feedback concerns and suggestions of third year dental students to the Dental Society, to ensure that the Society is run the way students want it to be.
  • Promote Dental Society events and sell tickets to the year
  • Organise the Mid-Way Dinner (you can recruit a team of BDS3 students to help you)

  • Have a positive approach towards 4th year dental students and set an example to reflect the standard of professionalism that is expected by the School’s management.
  • Communicate well with all course conveners in order to raise awareness about clinical and curricular requirements and reflect these back to fourth years so that students can plan ahead.
  • Feedback any concerns or suggestions of 4th dental students to the Dental Society, to ensure that the Society is run the way students want it to be.
  • Promote events the Dental Society are holding and sell tickets to the year

Dental Society Elections - BDS5 Rep (2 places)

Open to current 4th year BDS Dentistry Students. For more information please see the Committee Elections Handbook.

Responsibilties include:

  • Liaise with all fifth-year students and try to resolve any clinical or academic issues they may have at DentSoc and SSLC meetings.
  • Take on the role of Student Representative on DQAC (Dental Quality Assurance Committee) to assist in Quality Assurance matters
  • Set up and lead the Yearbook Committee to produce a leavers’ yearbook.
  • Have regular correspondence with the year to update them on requirements that are needed, reminders to complete certain ICAs, and to inform them of any other key clinical/curriculum matters.
  • Liaise closely with the organisers of the Graduation Dinner from committee and lower years to provide support and assistance to the Graduation Committee and keep Dental President updated on the progress.
  • Liaise with the External Affairs Officer (and external companies) to organise the Graduate Trade Fair and graduation committee events including the Grad Ball
  • Manage the finance of the Dental Graduation Committee in preparation for the Dental Graduation Ball.
  • Organise the Annual BL Dental Reunion event.
  • Liaise with the Treasurer to help them organise the Oral-B talks for BDS5
