Societies Newsletter 22/02/2018

Jam-packed with all the ways we recognise your hard work...

Hi Everyone!

QMSU Societies wanted to start off this Newsletter a pretty exciting message...

Hello! My name is Hannah and I’m your new Societies Coordinator. Apologies it’s taken a while for me to get here but I’ve finally started and super excited to start supporting you all in your development, events and activities!

A bit about me, I’ve been working with Societies in Students’ Unions for the past few years, most recently at City, University of London and prior to that at Roehampton Students’ Union. My favourite part about working with Societies is supporting groups with all your event plans and making them really successful; I have heard already you all do a pretty amazing job so I can’t wait to get working with you on those! I’ll be joining Sarah at the next Societies Drop in Session on Friday 2nd March so do pop by and say hello. We’ll be there answering any questions you have about your upcoming events as well as your fast approaching elections and AGMs.

I’m still waiting for my email address to come through but as soon as it does I will send this round to you all. Until then if there is anything we can help you with do get in contact via

su-societies@qmul.ac.uk

Best wishes,

Hannah Brown

I’m sure you’re all just as excited as we are to welcome her to the team! If you happen to see her around the Hub make sure to say hi.

AGM/Elections

It’s time to start thinking about the future of your society. All societies must elect a new committee during this academic year to take over for 2018-2019.

You can elect your new committee either online or at an Annual General Meeting and the Elections Form must be completed and submitted by Thursday 1st March (9am).

For more information, including the timetable for nominations and elections period, click here.

Societies Awards

Come and join us at this year’s Societies Awards, where we recognise and celebrate QM and BL societies for all of the wonderful work they’ve done this year. Nominations are now open to vote for which society you think deserves recognition for any of the following:

  • Best New Society
  • Most Improved Society
  • Committee Member of the Year
    Academic Society of the Year
  • Best Society Event
  • Collaboration of the Year
  • Society of the Year

Nominations close on Monday 5th March and don’t forget to register for your ticket to the event.

Click here to find out more on registration and nominating, and head over to our Facebook to see the pictures and video from last year’s awards.

Did we mention that there’s a prosecco reception?

Excellence Awards

Another amazing opportunity to gain some recognition for all the hard work your society has been doing over the last year is the Excellence Awards. There are also some amazing benefits to taking part in the awards, so be sure to fill in (with as much detail and as many pictures as possible) and submit the Excellence Awards Pack by 27th February 2018.

More information here.

National Societies Awards

Nominations for the National Societies Awards 2018 are now open! You can nominate your Societies for any of the 14 different awards, including the prestigious Best Society Award, which will be given to the best Society in the UK. They also have awards celebrating the amazing events and campaigns run by all fabulous student groups, as well as the Individual Award for Outstanding Contribution, given to a committee member who has given their all for their Society.

The deadline for nominations is midday on 23rd March 2018. You can submit your nomination here and find out more about the awards categories and the criteria they will be judged on here.

Volunteering at the London Marathon

This is your chance to be a part of the London Marathon… without the 26.2 miles of running! Every year, QMSU Volunteering recruits around 80 volunteers to be stewards at a particular section of the race in East London. Find the application form here and if you have any enquiries before signing up, contact our Volunteering Coordinator, Paul, at su-volunteering@qmul.ac.uk.

Drop-in Sessions

Our weekly drop-in sessions will be continuing after Reading Week – the next two are scheduled for Friday 2nd March between 2pm-4pm and the following week at the same time. Book a ten minute slot at reception, or just drop-in if you have any questions. It’s a great way to meet Hannah, too!

Annual Student Meeting

The Annual Student Meeting is your chance to get involved in the debate on issues decided by you. Ideas at the meeting have all been submitted by students, and you're invited to attend, participate in the debate and vote on the changes you would like to see. You will also get the chance to hear from your Elected representatives about what they have been up to,

This year the Annual Student Meeting incorporates both the Students' Union Annual General Meeting and Annual Members Meeting. We have to use these terms because of legal requirements, but don't worry it's not as complicated as it sounds - both parts will feature in the one Annual Student Meeting.

We'll also be picking a new name for the Hive, and you will decide from a shortlist of 6 names.

The meeting is taking place on Tuesday 27th February at 6:30pm  in the Mason Lecture Theatre, Bancroft Building. Find out more here.

And finally…

Society Officer Candidates

I’m sure you’re all aware that the nomination period for elections has come to an end and the candidates have been announced.

The candidates running for the Societies Officer on the Mile End Campus are

Adnan Hassan and Zahra Afzaal. You can read their short statements here and can expect their manifestos soon!

The candidates running for Societies Officer on the Barts & The London Campus are

Evan Chalatsis, Veda Kudva, Jay Stanley, and Reya Srivastava. You can read their short statements here  and can expect their manifestos soon!

The first Whitechapel Candidate debate is happening on Thursday 1st March at 6pm in the Milton Lecture Theatre. And the first Mile End Candidate debate is happening on Monday 5th March at 6:15pm in the Mason Lecture Theatre.

So, there’s quite a lot going on in your SU at the moment. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate in emailing su-societies@qmul.ac.uk. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Love, Sarah x
