London Sport Awards Nomination

Community Sport nominated for 2nd award in 2015

QMSU Community Sport has recently achieved its second nomination of the year, this time at the London Sport awards in the category of "Bigger and Better Workforce".

This award recognises achievement in developing and deploying all parts of the physical activity and sport workforce, both paid and voluntary. Community Sport is one of three nominations shortlisted for the award, announced at the awards evening at Lord's Cricket Ground on Thursday 21st January 2016.

Throughout the last year, we have funded qualifications for 30 students to become referees and 38 to train as coaches, with another 20 currently working towards their qualifications. 36 out of these 68 students were female (58%), more than 3x higher than the national average of 18% according to a report in 2013 from SportsCoachUK.

These students have delivered over 570 hours of voluntary coaching/refereeing in Tower Hamlets, not only gaining a significant amount of leadership experience, but developing their skills and increasing the provision of sport in the borough with partners such as Tower Hamlets Tennis, StreetGames and Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation.

Hayley Peacock was also given an honourable mention in the "Volunteer of the Year" category for her fantastic work with Queen Mary Women's Football Club and developing girls' football in Tower Hamlets.

This is another fantastic achievement for Community Sport, and it is another testament to our students' fantastic, hard work throughout 2015.
