Last week the Mathematics Society, together with 20 of their members, went to Giessen in Germany on their first organised trip abroad. The group were able to take in some German culture including the Mathematikum museum, founded by Albrecht Beutelspacher, a German mathematician!
Gabriella Kwolek, President of the Mathematics Society, said of the trip:
“We stayed at a youth hostel in Giessen, where we got to see what the city is like and enjoyed some delicious waffles. During our stay we went to see Greifenstein Castle and the world's first hands-on mathematics museum, the Mathematikum. It was amazing to see and participate in the exhibitions the museum had for us to take part in.
We also went to the city of Frankfurt and by joining the Frankfurt on Foot Tour, we had the opportunity to see some amazing places like The Old Town Square, The Book Burning Memorial, Alte Nikolai Church, a Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall and many more.
To finish our tour, we went to the top of the Main Tower and we got to see Frankfurt city from above, which was a fantastic experience. We also tried some German food like the traditional Schnitzel and German sausages as well as some delicious beer. We all had an amazing time and we can now say we know a little more about Germany!”
