If you're struggling with coursework or study, get help before the Christmas break
Queen Mary Students’ Union can offer you academic advice on a range of issues. Coursework deadlines are coming up for many students, and if you’re struggling, there’s no need to suffer in silence. If you want to apply for extenuating circumstances, or are thinking about taking a break from study, make sure you get your forms completed and submitted whilst staff are still around before the Christmas break.
Extenuating circumstances
If you’ve got deadlines for coursework coming up and you’re struggling (because of physical or mental health problems, or another serious issue) to get the work in on time you might want to consider submitting an extenuating circumstances application, or a late work form (in the case of English and Drama students). Remember, the College’s fit to sit policy applies to coursework as well as exams, so make sure you declare you’re having difficulties which may affect your mark BEFORE the work has been submitted.
If you want help with applying for extenuating circumstances you can contact Annie Mitchell, at a.c.mitchell@qmul.ac.uk. By contacting Annie this doesn’t mean you’ve submitted your extenuating circumstances application, you’ll have to locate your school’s form (check QMPlus) and find out the deadline for submission. The QMUL Advice & Counselling service also do a helpful leaflet on extenuating circumstances. Remember, don’t leave it too late, as staff won’t be around when QMUL is officially closed for the Christmas/New Year break.
Interruption
If you’ve been struggling over the last semester and are considering interrupting your studies it might be best to make your decision before the next semester starts. If you start the next semester and then interrupt later you’ll be liable for tuition fees for that semester. The interruption form needs to be signed by someone in your school, so make sure you get this done before QMUL closes for the Christmas/New Year break or in January before the new semester officially starts. A link to the form can be found here.
Again, you can contact Annie for advice on interrupting. And again too, Advice & Counselling do a helpful leaflet, there are separate ones for home/EU undergrads and international students. These can be found here and here.
