Queen Mary Women’s Hockey First Team BUCS Success!

This year, our Queen Mary Hockey Club’s women’s team had amazing success in their BUCS league.

The team finished in 2nd place in competitive BUCS South Eastern 3B league, just and just pipped the post on goal difference against Royal Veterinary College.

Despite losing their first match against Vets, they had an incredible recovery when they replayed them later in the season, winning 4-2 at their home ground of Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis centre in the Olympic Park.

However, a personal highlight for president Ellie was the team’s last match against Kings College London GKT, where they won 5-2. Ellie said:

“We really came together as a team and had some great set plays. It was my last ever BUCS game, along with lots of other members of the squad, and so it was great to end it on a high with AGM being that evening too.”

The team’s success as a whole was fantastic, and this could not have been achieved without the commitment and passion of each player. Ella Stephen was one such player who in particular stepped up, having little experience of hockey when first joining the team back in September, and going on to be awarded the club’s Most Improved Player 2017 Award.

Nonetheless the team’s success did not end on the pitch, and they recently came 2nd place in the Bow FoodBank competition for the greatest amount of donations, as well as doing a food and toiletries collection for Whitechapel Mission, and raising money for the mental health charity Mind.

As the team looks to take the promotion next year and build on their fantastic success, we are sure you will join us in wishing them the best of luck.
