Your Student Council spent a few days in sunny (and slightly rainy) Kent at their annual Away Weekend!
From the 10th to the 11th of September your Student Council spent some time in sunny (and slightly rainy) Kent at their Annual Away Weekend, to learn how to make change happen as leaders of the Students’ Union. Student Council is made up of student volunteer officers and representatives, who were elected in March during the Students’ Union elections.
This one-off event at the beginning of the year allows Student Council to get together for training and team-building. As well as fun (and slightly scary) activities involving heights, your Executive Officers led a session on democracy and how the Union could be made even better this year. Sessions took place on everything from the Union’s finances to accessibility and campaign planning. Staff also organised a simulated Students’ Union experience, ‘Con Mary’, where the pressure was cranked up by sending the reps on meetings with ‘Simone Gaskell’.
Miranda Black, Students’ Union President, is feeling confident about the coming academic year:
‘Student Council Away Weekend was great! We arrived on Friday and were told we would be staying outside. The experience was in tents - we all had our own beds so it was kind of like Harry Potter.
There were a range of team-building activities which challenged Student Council in different ways. ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ was an outdoor activity which saw our Student Council put on their harnesses and scale a giant ladder in pairs. Some people were great, but my legs are just too short!
I’ve left this weekend feeling so positive about the year ahead. Every single Student Council member got involved in each aspect of the weekend, and I already know they’re going to be an effective team and great to work alongside.’
The next Student Council meeting will take place on 11 October and any student is welcome to attend. If you want to submit a motion please email richard.stewart@qmul.ac.uk
