On Tuesday 15 November, Student Council met for the second time this term to debate an affiliation to Stand Up to Racism, lockers on campus as well as whether to boycott the National Student Survey. Student Council is open to all students and is where your Executive Officers, Part-Time Officers and Representatives discuss the issues you want us to tackle.
Here were the decisions:
- That the Union will not boycott the National Student Survey now as talks between the Union and University are still underway about a possible fee rise for both new students and those entering later years. The Union is lobbying for fees to stay the same, and announcing a boycott now may damage these talks. A boycott could still take place depending on the decision of the University after these talks have taken place, if Student Council pass the decision at their next meeting.
- The Union will refer the decision to invest in lockers to the Welfare Zone, a meeting between your elected Welfare Reps, to discuss further.
- After some debate and changes by Student Council the Stand Up to Racism motion passed, but it’s likely to be discussed at the Trustee Board to check it aligns with our charitable objectives.
- Student Media Bye-Law 13 was updated to reflect the organisations’ current activities, this decision will also be taken to Board of Trustees for approval.
Want to get involved in the debate next time? The next Student Council will take place on 6 December – if you have an idea to improve your student experience, submit a motion to Richard.stewart@qmul.ac.uk by 29 November. Information on how to submit a motion and further info about Student Council can be found on our website.
