Our first Student Council of the year was held on 11 October - find out what motions were passed!
On Tuesday 11 October the first Student Council of the year took place in the Students’ Union Hub. Student Council is open to all students and is where your Executive Officers, Part-Time Officers and Representatives discuss and debate the issues you want us to tackle.
As well as updates on what your Executive Officers are working on, a number of motions were passed by Student Council including:
- The Union will ensure there is an alcohol free space in the Students’ Union Hub and will host more alcohol-free events
- The Union will continue to lobby the University to provide adequate space for Friday Prayer
- The Union does not support the banning of electronic devices in lectures as it can disadvantage students with disabilities or specific learning needs
- The bye-laws process around Society disaffiliation have been improved, working in cooperation between the Union, Union’s Trustees and Society Officers
As always there were some lively comments on the #qmcouncil hashtag on Twitter – the top one will be featured in the new Executive Officers e-newsletter, so watch out for it in your inbox over the next few weeks! Your Executive Officers and Student Council will now get started on implementing these motions, but remember, it's important that our work is guided by you! Our President Miranda Black said:
"Student Council is full of motions and emotions! Please submit motions to Student Council and check each agenda- you never know if a motion is being debated that will affect you."
The next Student Council will take place on the 15th November 2016 – if you have an idea to improve your student experience, submit a motion to Richard.stewart@qmul.ac.uk by 8th November. Information on how to submit a motion and further info about Student Council can be found on our website.
