Bow Foodbank Volunteering Group

Bow Foodbank

Tower Hamlets is ranked the third most deprived local authority district in England with 70% of households surviving on an income of less than £20,000 a year and 42% of children living in poverty (the highest rate in all of the UK).

Bow Foodbank was founded in early 2014 to alleviate poverty in this area by providing food and support to the Bow community. It is open every Monday from 9:30am to 12:30pm at St Mary and Holy Trinity Church, 230 Bow Road, London, E3 3AH. For more information, visit Bow Foodbank’s website here.

Bow Foodbank Volunteer Group

We launched the Bow Foodbank Volunteer Group in September 2014 to engage volunteers from Queen Mary University in activities that support the Bow Foodbank. Over the past two years, we have become an integral part of Bow Foodbank, providing a team of volunteers to work at the foodbank every Monday, participating in supermarket collections every term and organising on campus fundraising initiatives for which we even won an award at QMUL's Sustainability Awards. We were also recently been made finalists for the London and Essex Young People of the Year awards.

What We Do
At the Foodbank
On Sunday evenings from 4:30-5:30pm, we meet at Bow Church (also called St Mary & Holy Trinity Church), 230 Bow Road, E3 3AH to help shift food to Bow Church and stock it in the shop so that it is ready for the next day. (Use the side entrance which can be reached by following the path from the front door round to the left of the church.)

On Monday mornings from 9am to 1pm, we help out with the running of the foodbank at Bow Church, whether that is befriending the clients, helping out at the shop or serving refreshments.

Food Collections

We hold supermarket collections twice a term which involves encouraging shoppers to buy items of food for the foodbank and campus collections throughout the year which involves encouraging students to donate unwanted food and necessities.

In addition, we also host our annual Green Mary Week Foodbank Competition in which teams and societies in Queen Mary University of London compete to raise as many donations as they can to win prizes.

We have socials once a term as a reward for all the hard work you do. Furthermore, once you complete 10 hours of volunteering with our group, you will receive a free QMSU Bow Foodbank T-shirt!
