This Thursday, College Senate, a body which has primary responsibility for oversight of the academic activity of Queen Mary, will make a decision on whether to increase the turnaround time for the first phase of academic appeals from 28 days to 3 months.
This means that it could take three months for the university to make a decision on whether students have grounds for appeal, a timeframe we consider to be completely unacceptable and detrimental to any student who goes through the appeal process. We believe:
-
Students should not be expected to wait three months to know if they have grounds for appeal. It would be better for students if the college reduced delays through better resourcing of the appeals office, rather than entrenching them in regulations.
-
It is unfair that students who are successful on appeal will have to wait until the following September to retake a year because their case took three months or longer to process.
-
Any significant amendment to academic regulations should be subject to proper review and student consultation.
Any student at Queen Mary could face an appeals process and so it is vital that all students work hard to ensure the appeals process is as fair and fast as possible. This may be our only chance to stop the turnaround time for student casework from increasing.
