BL Medical Education Support Society (MESS) Committee Elections 2024/25

Welcome to the Barts and The London Medical Education Support Society (MESS) 2024/25 elections. This is your opportunity to be a part of BL's ASOC Cup-winning student group of the year. Positions running through QMSU include: Co-Presidents (2 total) (must have previously held a MESS committee roll) Vice-President (must have previously held a MESS committee roll) Treasurer (must be a MESS-approved teacher) Secretary (must be a MESS-approved teacher) To run for any of these rolls you must also be a subs-paying member of MESS. The Year 1, 2, and 3 coordinator rolls will be voted for via a Google Form that will be reviewed by select members of the MESS Committee. President (2 places)

MESS Co-Presidents In order to run for this position you must be a subs-paying member and have previously held a position on the MESS Committee. Please see the full role description

Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the activities of the society
  • Responsible for ensuring we act in accordance with SMD regulations (i.e. quality control by ensuring all teachers have been
    auditioned and trained)
  • Liaise with the MESS Staff President (Prof Alistair Noyce)
  • Organise teacher recruitment. This should ideally occur twice every academic year but must be done at least once to ensure
    the teachers community is sufficiently large enough to fill timetables. Senior MESS teachers and are requested to help the
    presidents with the audition process
  • Organise freshers fair and ensure committee are present to enthusiastically promote the society
  • Assist Year Co-ordinators in timetabling and ensure timely uploading of timetables to teacher group and encourage sign ups
  • Liaise with other academic societies for collaborated teaching events, ensuring they are MESS approved teachers and cover
    the appropriate content
  • Liaise with Gozo MESS to ensure they have adequate resources and assistance with queries
  • Ensure other societies which were not founded to provide academic support to medical students are not able to dilute the
    quality controlled extra-curricular teaching environment or take advantage of students by forcing them to pay subs for a
    one-off teaching event

Vice President

MESS Vice-President In order to run for this position you must be a subs-paying member and have previously held a position on the MESS Committee. Please see the full role description

Responsibilities:

  • The Vice-President of MESS works closely alongside the Co-Presidents and Principal Officers of the committee to oversee
    and aid all members of the MESS committee in the execution of their roles
  • Running of the MESS social media (linked Instagram and Facebook) accounts, including advertising teaching schedules and providing updates on rooms and locations being used
  • The person specification for the VP of MESS is an individual who is very organised and reliable, works well in a team and also
    has leadership qualities to help manage the rest of the committee. A strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and Google
    Drive is also essential

Treasurer

MESS Treasurer In order to run for this position you must be a subs-paying member and a MESS-approved teacher. Please see the full role description

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the timely submission of all grant funding applications
  • Overall responsibility for brand positioning and coherent marketing campaigns. For this, liaise with all the Year Co-ordinators
    so that the advertisements made by the society are in-keeping with our theme
  • Responsible for reimbursing any society related expenses

Secretary

MESS Secretary In order to run for this position you must be a subs-paying member and a MESS-approved teacher. Please see the full role description

Responsibilities:

  • Organisation of room bookings for the regular MESS sessions
  • Maintenance of the MESS
    Google Drives. These are highly valuable resources used by the vast majority of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years and hence it is
    essential they are kept regularly up to date
  • Help design and distribute certificates at the end of the year
  • Regularly assist with other committee responsibilities and aid other members with their roles where
    necessary
  • The person specification for the Secretary of MESS is an individual who has excellent organisational skills and is able to work
    effectively within the committee team. They also must also understand the ethos of MESS and work with the rest of the
    committee to help MESS thrive
