Liberation Awards

This year we are hosting our first ever Liberation Awards! We wanted to create these awards to celebrate the contributions of students who work so hard to improve liberation and welfare at our university.

The Awards will take place on Tuesday 14th April 2026 at 6pm in Draper's Lounge (Mile End). Nominations close Nominations close Thursday 31st March at 12pm.

The Liberation Awards are open to students, reps and student staff and staff members. Please see the criteria for the awards below.

The Awards

Student Activist of the Year
Criteria

Change is at the heart of liberation, which this student has encapsulated. They have worked to create change across campus, improving their community’s lives and actively lobbying for an impactful and long-lasting difference.


Winner: Basira Rashid

Highly Commended: Hanen Elobeid / Wajiha Anwar

Student Wellbeing Champion
Criteria

This award is for an individual who’s worked to actively be engaged in, or promoted, social, mental or physical wellbeing activities that inspire students. The winner would be someone who is passionate about lobbying changes, promoting schemes already in place to help fellow students and is someone who goes the extra mile to champion the importance of wellbeing.

Highly Commended: Preet Gosal and Phoebe Plugge Porter

Best Liberation Initiatives
(Term 1) Criteria

A total of 3 awards will be given to recognise the Best liberation Initiative in Term One. The Campaigns that are eligible is any liberation activity occurring in Term One of the Academic Year. This may or may not include our policy led campaigns below:

  • Black History Month
  • Islamic Heritage Month
  • Disability History Month
  • Christian Gospel Week

Winner: Disability History Month / Black History Month
(Term 2) Criteria

A total of 3 awards will be given to recognise the Best liberation Initiative in Term 2.The Campaigns that are eligible is any liberation activity occurring in Term 2 of the Academic Year. This may or may not include our policy led campaigns below:

  • Jewish Heritage Fortnight
  • LGBTQ+ History Month
  • Asian Heritage Month
  • Anti-Apartheid Week

Winner: LGBTQ+ History Month

Highly Commended: Asian Heritage Month

Best New Liberation Initiative
Criteria

This is a for an initiative that supports communities not in our eight core liberation campaign and is a new project, campaign or event that has occurred.


Winner: Women’s Week / Goes Continental
Campaign of the Year
Criteria

This award is for an individual or group who have delivered a campaign which has created an inspirational and sustainable impact to develop a better student experience and/or awareness of an issue.


Winner: Neda Simic: Women’s events and fundraising campaign

Highly Commended: International Student Experience Interns

Best Student Group Led Liberation Event of the Year
Criteria

This award is for a liberation event run by one of our Student Groups (such as Clubs, Societies or Groups), which creates a positive impact, well attended and was an innovative way to run a liberation event. It had a lasting impact to the community it represented. Shortlisted canididates will receive a liberation badge on their Club/ Society/ Group page


Winner: QMBL Friends of Palestine Society for their Ramadan Student Iftar 2026 / PGR Society

Highly Commended: Bollywood Dance, Hindu Awareness Week Showcase / Open Jum'mah by Isoc

Outstanding Contribution
Criteria

This award is for a student or group (including societies) who have made an incredible impact across a wide range of students, with liberation. This could be through consistently producing high quality events, excellent content, or being a champion for change across the university this year.
