Giulia - Akindolie Medical Scholarship

In addition to her voluntary role as a Black & Minority Ethnic Representative for the Students’ Union, Giulia is the Community Sport Officer for the Queen Mary Netball Club and during the summer she supported the QMSU Sports Camp as a Voluntary Coach. For the 2018/19 academic year, she is taking a lead on a number of projects which include recruiting members of the Netball Club to support school sport delivery, providing opportunities for students to be upskilled as umpires and delivering a social cohesion project with a focus of reducing the inactivity of secondary school pupils at local schools in Tower Hamlets.

Through the Community Sport programme, she has logged 40 hours of voluntary work facilitating sport in the local community. Having reached the gold award after 30 hours of voluntary work, she will receive a funded Level 1 coaching qualification in recognition of her outreach.

In September, Giulia submitted an application to the Akindolie Medical Scholarship which supports the pipeline of future UK junior doctors from BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic) backgrounds. Applications are open annually for the scholarship which comprises of a £1,500 bursary and a year’s leadership mentoring and support. Despite not being selected as the main recipient for the scholarship, she was awarded a bursary of £200 in recognition of the amazing work that she has done.

Giulia Olayemi – “I'm truly humbled for the support that the Akindolie family are providing. This will be supporting my efforts in self-funding my Medical degree! I'm excited for the opportunities that this will bring and am eager to continue to support students who are interested in the Medical field”

Ash Marshalleck – Community Sport Coordinator has said of Giulia:

“Giulia is a credit to the Community Sport programme and it was a pleasure to provide her with a reference for this scholarship. She is extremely driven and passionate about matters close to her heart and the local community. With the high volume of applications for the scholarship, I was delighted to find out that she was still selected to receive a bursary. She truly deserves it and I wish her all the best with any future opportunities”
