Hi my name is Talhah and I am running for the position of Barts Post-Graduate Taught Representative. I graduated from the Barts Medical School in 2016 and have worked as a qualified doctor since then. This year I am taking a year out and returning to Barts to study the Global Health Taught MSc.
Having sat on student council and the SPC in 2013/14 as the Barts Societies Officer, I have the experience and knowledge of what is needed to help represent my cohort both in and out of student council and the students' union. That same year I won student councillor of the year for the work I put in to help the socities at Barts as well as my various other campaigns that I did. I was also heavily involved in the union for several years via working there part time for my entire student career to having sat on the societies board and on several committees.
I know that the position I'm running for this time is different. This position will involve more advocating for my colleagues and less administrative skills. However I believe my experience as societies officer, ensuring I got involved in every society and speaking to their committees as to what they need and helping them get it will translate across quite well to this position. Post-graduate students tend to be forgotten at the union as thye make up a small minority, however this year the current SPC have already demonstarted their resolve to change this by introduing monthly events and I would like to help them not only orgaise this but also create more events such as day trips out to various cities. I think this would work well as a larg majority of those on the taught MSc courses are international stduents who have come to the UK for the first time. I also want to ensure there is a wider variety of events that cater to different people and to try and get everyone involved.
Along with my exceptional organisational abilities and my dedication to improve the lives of those around me I believe I will make a good representative for you and all of our other colleagues on the postgraduate taught courses. I would very much appreciate if you could vote for me.
Thank you,
Talhah
