Vote BILAL AHMED for NUS Delegate

Hi, my name is Bilal Ahmed, and I am campaigning to be Queen Mary's NUS delegate for 2018-19. I have just started my second year at the university, studying BSc Economics, Statistics and Mathematics; and after an eventful and experiencing first year, I am eager to put forward policies at the nationwide NUS conference in March 2019.

What is NUS?

NUS, or formally known as National Union of Students, is a non-profit student led body which manages and controls all of the UK's individual university student unions. The NUS meets once a year to decide on budgeting, policies and voting of positions such as President and Vice-President.

My Policies

  • Increasing availability of bursaries at Queen Mary. Education should be available to everyone, not just to those who can afford it. I would like to implement a more lenient scholarship system at the university.
  • Stronger laws to tackle discrimination of ethnic minorities. We must stand up to those who display prejudice against minority groups. Putting stronger laws into place will help the Queen Mary community unify against this issue.
  • Aiding countries which are teetering on the brink of collapse, through charity. Countries and states such as Palestine, Yemen, and Myanmar need all the help they can get.
  • Increasing mental health awareness for males. Mental illness affectes everyone, regardless of gender. I hope to abolish the taboo idea of mental illness within the male community, and organise/strengthen the necessary support students at university need to overcome hurdles like anxiety and depression.

Experience

  • Course Representative - working as a representative for course LG11 has allowed me to appreciate the Queen Mary Student Union's values and goals. I am fully aware of the processes which keep our union in shape. My experience as a course rep makes me suitable for this NUS delegate role.
  • Model United Nations (MUN) - having participated in MUN for over 5 years and attending international conferences, I have augmented my public speaking, lobbying, and persuasive skills. I attended and gave a speech at Greece's largest MUN conference, where over 600 delegates attended, some of which were ambassadors and senior politicians. I received a Top Delegate Award at this event also.
