For A Louder Student Voice
School of English and Drama Representative - Katie Butler

I'm running to be our next School of English and Drama Representative because I care about creating the best environment for SED students - where all of us feel engaged and represented.

I've played an active role in conversations with SED over the last year, becoming an SED Student Ambassador, gathering student concerns and signatures, and helping the department come up with solutions - such as collaborating with the SED Director of Education to get seminars recorded for the benefit of students as we entered Semester 2.

I have the experience to use the role of SED Representative to further the dialogue between staff and students, and to better SED as a whole, making student voices louder.

Student Voice and Student Access
Prioritise Open and Honest Communication

It can often feel, as students, that we're the last to know about changes being made to our courses, and that we have no say in the decision. As SED Representative, I would push for more immediate updates where possible, and for more frequent responses from SED about student concerns. I also hope that with this, we can create more of a community within SED, for joint and single honours, commuters, on campus, UK or International students, full time, part time, at any stage in our degrees.

Increased Opportunity for Our Voices

Working alongside other representatives within the SU, SED, and the SSLC, I would like to expand the amount of opportunities for student voices to be heard, introducing more frequent meetings where concerns and queries can be handled at a greater pace and volume, and to escalate the conversations where appropriate.

I would also continue Jessica Galloway’s previous policy of working for the individual - always contactable to answer student questions, and raise student voices, even informally, whether through email or social media.

Access to SED Resources

Given the recent circumstances the world has found itself in, now more than ever it's crucial that students are actively given as much access to resources relevant to their degrees as possible. I would lobby for continued, sustainable access for all SED students, particularly for that of e-books/texts where possible, and improved ease of use with systems such as Inter-Library Loan Requests. I would also offer greater sign-posting of what systems and services are available and are best for SED students.

Improved Access to QMUL Services and Pastoral Care

As someone who appreciates the importance of student pastoral care and good mental health, especially at times of increased anxiety such as we are in now, I would like to work with the SU, DDS, SED and Mental Health First Aiders to not only make sure students know what services and support systems are available to them, but also to increase access for all students. Introducing more accessible and useful resources for all students, on or off campus, to access, that set students up for the best support during our time at QMUL.
