Climate Action Week: From Carbon Footprints to Systems Change

Thursday 20 February 2025, 12:30pm - 2pm

Common Room, School of Geography
About this event

Rethinking carbon footprints: Explore how shifting the focus from individuals to systems can drive real climate solutions. Facilitated by Professor Catherine Nash, School of Geography; Dr Heather McMullen, Wolfson Institute of Public Health; Dr Jennie Doyle, School of Geography.

Dive into the power of concepts and imagination beyond fossil fuels!

  • From Carbon Footprints to Regenerative Stories: Discover how the fossil fuel industry created the concept of carbon footprints to shift the blame for emissions onto individuals.
  • Bringing systems into view: We'll unpack how this idea has influenced public perception and discuss the shift needed to hold systems accountable.
  • Alternative Imaginings: Explore new ideas and values that can drive us towards not just a low-carbon economy but a regenerative, life-sustaining world.

We invite you to participate in our workshop, which is part of the project ‘Critical Hope: Co-creating Learning Resources for a Changing World’.

This workshop focuses on unpacking the concept of the carbon footprint and thinking about responsibility and accountability in responding to climate change. It forms part of a project on developing effective teaching methods to help address significant issues such as social, economic, political, environmental, and climate crises. Join us in this journey of critical thinking and creative solutions!
