About this event

What is 'The Pirates of Penzance'?

The Pirates of Penzance’ (1879) is a two-act comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, following the adventures of Frederic, a sheltered young man who has been apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates. As Frederic comes of age, he resolves to leave the pirates and devote himself to their downfall, especially after falling in love with Mabel, the daughter of the famed Modern Major-General. However, Frederic discovers that, due to a technicality regarding his leap year birthday, he is still bound to the pirates for many more years. The story unfolds with mistaken identities, clever wordplay, and is known for its vivacious music, and satirical take on one’s sense of duty.
