The Barts’ Microsurgical National Teaching Series offers a consultant-led, structured introduction to foundational microsurgical skills for medical students and junior doctors. This unique programme bridges the principles of plastic surgery and ophthalmology, providing participants with the opportunity to develop precision, coordination, and confidence under expert supervision.

Across four practical sessions, attendees will gain hands-on experience using both loupes and the operating microscope, progressing from basic skill acquisition to applied microsurgical techniques relevant to reconstructive and ophthalmic practice.

Learning objectives include:
•  Demonstrating correct ergonomics and instrument handling under magnification
•  Developing hand–eye coordination and fine motor control through threading and dissection tasks

•  Performing vascular and neural anastomoses on chicken leg models with attention to accuracy and patency
•  Exploring ophthalmic and reconstructive applications, including corneal transplant suturing and eyelid reconstruction
