Focus Team Programme

Supporting high performance teams.

The Focus Team Programme supports clubs competing at the highest levels of BUCS with a structured package of performance support, bursary funding, and a dedicated staff contact. Selection is invitation-based - clubs are identified and contacted by the department each year based on BUCS performance data, engagement history, and eligibility criteria.


Eligibility

Clubs selected for the Focus Team Programme must meet the following criteria:

  • Compete at BUCS Tier 1 or above (where Tier 1 is the only available tier nationally, eligibility is assessed on a sport-by-sport basis)
  • Have no active or outstanding formal disciplinary complaints
  • Have a structured coaching or training framework in place for the first team
  • Be financially sustainable
  • Have completed the Club Sport Development Plan for 2026-27 in full and on time
  • Have clear and evidenced performance goals for the coming season

Meeting these criteria does not guarantee Focus Team status. Clubs are identified and contacted by the department. If you believe your club meets the criteria and has not been contacted, email su-performance.sport@qmul.ac.uk and we will be in touch.

Current offer
  • A £300 performance bursary to spend on agreed performance activity by 31 July 2027
  • A designated performance sport staff member as a named point of contact
  • Two check-ins across the year - one per semester
  • Access to performance and career development workshops
  • Dedicated profile on the QMSU Sport website and active social media promotion throughout the year
  • Support with BUCS entries, fixture administration, and travel arrangements
  • Student athlete recruitment opportunities through QMSU channels and events

Each club also agrees a personalised support package with the department at the point of joining the programme. This is tailored to the club's sport, stage of development, and performance goals for the year.

How selection works

The department identifies clubs each year based on BUCS performance data, engagement history, and eligibility criteria. Selected clubs are contacted directly with an invitation to take part.
