Culture List

Here's our culture list, a selection of books, film, TV, podcasts and more recommended by our organising committee.

Struggles & Liberation
  • Kazakhstan: The 1986 Jeltoqsan protests refer to when Kazakh youth demonstrated against Soviet control and political interference. Liberation came in 1991 when Kazakhstan declared independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
  • Palestine: The Nakba (“catastrophe”) refers to the violent, mass displacement of Palestinians following the 1948 Arab–Israeli war. Palestinians today continue to be dispossessed and displaced with over 5 million Palestinian refugees scattered across the Middle East.

Sport & Play
  • Malaysia: Batu Seremban is a Malaysian game that involves having a set number of items (e.g. 5 pebbles), tossing one item into the air and then gathering the rest of the items before catching the item you threw.
  • Pakistan & India: Cricket was introduced to India and Pakistan during British colonial rule, but it has since become one of the most popular and widely played sports in both countries. Today, it is played with intense passion, and for many, represents a reclaiming of their colonial legacy.

Culture & Community
  • Nepal: Nepal has a Living Goddess! The Kumari is a young girl chosen to embody divine energy. During festivals like Indra Jatra, she’s carried through the streets of Kathmandu in a grand chariot procession.
  • Sri Lanka: The official language of Sri Lanka, Tamil, is the oldest language in the world! It was declared a UNESCO classical language in 2004 and inscriptions in Tamil have been found from the year 500 BCE.
