Culture List

Here's our culture list, a selection of books, film, TV, podcasts and more recommended by our organising committee.

Struggles & Liberation
  • Vanuatu: The Nagriamel movement is a significant political and cultural movement in Vanuatu, advocating for indigenous rights and traditional customs. It played a crucial role in the country's path to independence in 1980.
  • Palau: In 2009, Palau became the first country in the world to establish a shark sanctuary, banning commercial shark fishing. This was done to protect shark populations and marine biodiversity in response to global overfishing of sharks.

Sport & Play
  • New Zealand: The Māori of New Zealand have a powerful cultural tradition called the haka, a ceremonial dance or challenge, often performed at gatherings and before rugby matches.
  • Australia: One of the most popular sports in Australia is Australian football, also called "footy" or "Aussie rules". It is a contact sport with two teams of eighteen players on an oval field. Each team must kick the football into the other team's goal posts to gain points and win.

Culture & Community
  • Tonga: The Lakālaka dance is considered the national dance of Tonga. It tells stories through singing and synchronised movement and is honored by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Fiji: Fiji is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the Pacific, many of whom are descended from Indian labourers brought during British rule. They developed a unique culture that blended Fijian, Indian & Muslim traditions.
