Queen Mary Aerospace Society & QMUAS
If you want to do more than just study aerospace, the QM Aerospace Society and QMUAS are where you can actually build it.
Queen Mary Aerospace Society brings together students interested in aviation, space and engineering through technical projects, workshops, competitions, industry links and socials.
Alongside the society, Queen Mary Unmanned Aerial Systems (QMUAS) gives students the chance to design, build and test a real aircraft for the IMechE UAS Challenge, one of the UK's major student aerospace engineering competitions.
IMechE UAS Challenge
QMUAS develops an autonomous unmanned aircraft around a real competition mission.
Members can work across:
- Aerostructures (aerodynamics, structural analysis, manufacturing and integration)
- Propulsion (motor & propeller integration)
- Avionics and Software (electronics, hardware & software integration)
- Payload (design & delivery automation)
Last year's team successfully made it through competition scrutineering, passing the technical and safety checks required to progress.
This year, we're building on that and getting even more students involved in the design, development and testing of the aircraft.
Get hands on
You don't need loads of experience to get involved.
We run drone workshops, associate sessions, CFD hackathons and technical projects throughout the year.
Our CFD hackathons let members get hands on with simulation, test different approaches and work through aerospace problems together.
You could be designing aircraft components, running simulations, working with electronics, manufacturing parts or helping test systems that end up on the aircraft.
Industry connections
We're also building links with engineering companies and organisations including Ansys, giving members exposure to professional simulation tools, CFD, structural analysis and industry engineering workflows.
We also run technical sessions, industry talks and collaborative events throughout the year.
Women in Engineering
AeroSoc also supports Women in Engineering, with events, networking and opportunities aimed at encouraging greater participation and representation across aerospace and engineering.
Our Women in Engineering Co Leads help organise activities and give students another way to connect with the wider engineering community at Queen Mary.

No previous experience is required.
Whether you've never touched CAD before or you're already building and simulating things yourself, there's room to learn and contribute.
