Women in Surgery

Hi everyone!

We are Barts' official Women In Surgery Society. Although women now make up the majority of medical graduates, they remain underrepresented in surgical careers and continue to face prejudice in the workplace - especially in surgery.

As a society our mission statement is:

• Addressing Equity in Opportunity: Actively work to balance the scales by recognising and addressing the historical and ongoing disparities in opportunities available to female and non-binary surgeons. Promote equitable access to career-enhancing roles and decision-making positions in surgery for all genders.
• Fostering Confidence and Inclusion: Create a supportive and welcoming community that champions the confidence and professional growth of women and non-binary individuals in surgery. Ensure that our society is a place where every member, regardless of gender identity, feels valued and empowered to contribute fully.
• Enhancing Professional Development: Provide structured opportunities for all members to develop and showcase their surgical portfolios through mentorship, networking, and access to innovative surgical practices and technologies.

Throughout the year we hope to host talks from various different female surgeons, have relaxed socials with Prof Mahendran, workshops and other non-academic activities.
