At the intersection of Big Law and pro bono.
QMPBS is uniquely positioned through the practical opportunities it offers its members. Alongside hands-on pro bono work, we help students understand the commercial legal profession, expand their networks and gain experience that can strengthen their applications and future careers.
This year, we are significantly expanding the Society through several new initiatives.
Our Dentons and BCLP legal clinic placements provide at least 96 placement opportunities across the year, an opportunity offered exclusively through our Society at Queen Mary. A new backup system will also allow members to fill spaces when selected students are unable to attend, helping us maximise participation throughout the year. Considering that we have over 100 members, we feel it is important to accommodate as many students as possible.
We are also launching The Brief, our weekly newsletter featuring an application deadline tracker, the week’s key law-related reads, QMPBS events and a new brand and campus ambassador section where students can share opportunities directly with our members.
The Brief will also introduce our London-wide networking buddy system. Members attending networking events, insight days and workshops will be able to connect with other QMPBS members going to the same events, making networking less daunting and helping everyone get more out of opportunities across London.
Recognising the role of pro bono within the wider commercial legal profession, we will also pursue open collaborations with other student societies, exposing members to different industries, sectors and areas of law.
We will also be running an inter-university moot competition with City St George’s, giving students the opportunity to develop their advocacy, legal research and teamwork skills.
QMPBS is designed to give students more than information. We want our members to gain practical experience, understand the profession, expand their networks and be ready when the next opportunity presents itself.
