The Sylheti Society aims to promote the preservation, celebration, and awareness of Sylheti language, script, and culture. Sylheti is often misunderstood as simply a dialect, but it is a distinct language with its own writing system, Sylheti Nagri, and a rich cultural heritage that deserves to be recognised and celebrated.

Our society provides a welcoming space for students to explore and learn about Sylheti language and culture through interactive language workshops, poetry nights, film screenings, storytelling, Dhamail dance, and traditional arts. We hope to raise awareness of Sylheti heritage while bringing people together through shared learning, creativity, and cultural exchange.

Whether you speak Sylheti fluently, have Sylheti roots and want to reconnect with your heritage, or are simply curious to learn something new, everyone is welcome! No previous knowledge of the language or culture is required.

Through our sessions and events, we aim to:

• Preserve our language by teaching members how to read and write in Sylheti Nagri
• Build a community where students can meet new people, share experiences, and connect with their heritage. 
• Raise awareness of Sylheti as a distinct language and promote its recognition.

Weekly Sessions
Every Tuesday | 5pm–7pm
Location: LG7, G. O. Jones Building
Our weekly sessions will focus on learning to read and write in Sylheti Nagri. Whether you are starting from scratch or already have some familiarity with the script, our sessions will give you the opportunity to learn, practise, and develop your skills in a supportive environment.

We also plan to introduce spoken Sylheti language sessions in the future, helping members develop their verbal communication skills alongside their reading and writing.

Socials!

Alongside our weekly learning sessions, we will organise socials every couple of weeks to help members get to know one another, make friends, and build lasting connections. We also plan to host a range of cultural activities throughout the year, including:

• Poetry nights and storytelling
• Dhamail dance and traditional arts
• Cultural celebrations and heritage events
• Collaborative workshops and community socials

There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved, meet new people, and celebrate Sylheti culture together. Keep an eye out for announcements about upcoming events!
