About Us
The Health Justice and Liberation Society is a collective space for medical students to question, connect and act. We explore how health is shaped not only by biology and clinical care, but by power, poverty, racism, borders, housing, climate, gender, disability, work and the wider structures that organise our lives.
We believe healthcare does not exist in isolation from the world around it. Health inequalities are produced through systems, relationships and material conditions - and changing them requires more than individual clinical interventions.
The society is a co-created space for critical learning, collective reflection, radical imagination and concrete action. We bring together students, communities, healthcare workers, researchers, and organisations to learn from lived experience, challenge dominant narratives and build connections across medicine and movements for social change.
The Transformation Cycle
Each theme follows a Transformation Cycle:
1. Inspiration: Listen and Connect
We begin with the experiences of people and communities most affected by an issue. Through community voices, patient stories, speakers, visits, films and workshops, we ground our learning in lived reality.
2. Reflection & Radical Imagination: Understand and Reimagine
Together, we ask what structures, histories, policies and power relations shape these experiences. We then move beyond critique: what could healthcare look like if it were organised around justice, dignity, solidarity and collective wellbeing? What alternatives or solutions can we imagine and create together?
3. Action: Organise and Transform
We turn collective understanding into concrete action. This might mean co-creating educational resources, developing policy recommendations, supporting campaigns, collaborating with community organisations, challenging institutional practices or creating practical tools for healthcare settings.
Our aims
Our themes may include migrant and refugee health, housing and homelessness, disability justice, climate justice, prison health and abolition, food insecurity, mental health inequalities, and racial and gender justice.
This is not a space for simply learning about injustice. It is a space to learn with one another, build solidarity, connect medicine with wider struggles for justice, and experiment with what change can look like.
We ask not only “What is wrong?”, but “Why has it been made this way, who has the power to change it, and what can we build together?”
