About

Queen Mary University of London Boat Club (QMULBC) is proud to be a mixed club at the center of the London rowing scene, boating from London Regatta Centre. QMULBC welcomes everybody of all abilities, with the large majority of our new members each year having never rowed before university.

Whether it's the thrill of racing at BUCS, the prestige of going to Henley Royal Regatta, rowing recreationally, or being involved in a thriving social environment, QMULBC is perfect for individuals of all skills and fitness levels to fulfill the ultimate university experience.

Whilst rowing is a competitive sport for those that want to train hard, we also know that university is a time for getting out and meeting new people. Every year QMULBC welcomes a great number of members who enjoy the social side of university sport. We host a range of different socials every year, which are fondly remebered by our current and alumni members alike.

How to get involved:

  1. Follow our Instagram @qmulbc and sign up for our taster with the link in the bio! Or get in contact with the club committee members below
  2. Attend the taster session in September - this session will be completely free and is the perfect opportunity to see what we're all about!
  3. Purchase your subs - at the QMSU Hub (Mile End), BLSA reception (Whitechapel), or online on the right-hand side of this page.
  4. Enjoy! You will be able to shape your Boat Club experience to suit you. Whether it is exercise as a casual rower, leaning to steer the boat as a cox, just trying something new, or you've heard rumours about our legendary socials... Maybe however you've joined for the glory to train hard and represent QM in races across the country, no matter what we can't wait to see you this coming year!

Students Union Welcome Fair (2025):

Date: 18th Sept 11am-6pm, 19th Sept 10am-4pm
Venue: QMotion Sports Hall

QMULBC will be exhibiting our sign-up stand alongside all the other societies on campus, come down and say hi and we'll be more than happy to answer any questions about everything from rowing and coxing to the best local pubs in the area.

Taster Sessions (2025):

Dates and venues for 2025 taster days TBC. Keep a look out here or on our instagram @qmulbc for updates!

All abilities are more than welcome, so why not come along and have a go! The taster session is just our chance to show you around our facilities and get you as excited about rowing as we are, and it's completely free! In the first few weeks of term, we will also host tank starter sessions at the London Regatta Centre, a perfect introduction to rowing for beginners or a refresher session for those getting back into the sport.

Equipment:

Whilst the club provides all the essential rowing equipment, you will need to bring a contactless card for train travel, water, food, sliders/flipflops/wellies, a sports kit (clothes you would workout in), and a spare change of clothes as there's a chance you may get a little wet!

We have five rowing boats some pictured below left to right: PofE (8+), Millenium Mary (8+), John G (4+). Not pictured are Kor Blimey (4+) and SS Johnson (1x)

Training:

Training sessions on the water generally last 2hrs anytime Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, extending to any day of the week when crews are free in the build-up to races. Participation is important for those wishing to row with us competitively, with land training also expected for competitive crews taking place at our on-campus gym, QMotion.

Alongside the captains, our experienced coaches and senior rowers are always on hand to offer fitness advice and rowing tips to anyone in need, don't be afraid to ask!

Competitions:

We compete in a variety of races from regattas to head races to sprints! Including: Docklands Head, UH Head, UH Fresher Sprints, Head of the River, Women's Head of the River, Cambridge Head, BUCS Regatta, Poplar Regatta, Drapers Cup and many more! Race dates and a full racing calendar will be announced to members at the beginning of the season
