About

Wilkommen!

Welcome to German Society! Whether you speak German or are learning it, have German heritage, or just want to come and make friends, everyone is welcome!

We actively aim to create a sense of community (Gemeinschaftsgefühl) by bringing together learners and speakers of German, as well as anybody who is just interested in the culture and language. We are a society that's open to everyone! We aim to provide cultural events and festivities as well as bring our members together with our love of German!

We will be hosting events in the Matt Spencer Boardroom, on the second floor of the SU building

Events to look forward to:

Stammtisch
Costume nights
Film get togethers
Karaoke

German Society X Drapers Language Café

Have you got a 200-day streak on Duolingo? 🇩🇪

Missing conversations in your native language? Keen to practise a new one? Or just curious about other cultures?

Join us in the Lounge for the Global Language Café! This month, we're teaming up with German Society as part of their Oktoberfest celebrations, bringing a little extra German language and culture to the mix.

Whether you're a beginner, a fluent speaker or somewhere in between, come along to practise any language you'd like, share your own and meet fellow students from around the world. All languages are welcome, and no fluency is required, just bring your curiosity and willingness to chat!

Writer In Residence

We are hosting a film screening in collaboration with The Centre for Anglo German Relations Writer In Residence Tim Staffel!

Tim is an author and director, responsible for the likes of Terrordrom (1998), which was then adapted for the stage and directed by Frank Castorf in the year of its publication; and more recently Südstern (2023), which was longlisted for the German Book Prize in 2023.

Tim wrote and directed the film Westerland (2012), which screened in 2012 at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival and at the 48th Chicago International Film Festival in the New Directors Competition. You can buy tickets for free on our Eventbrite page!
