Welcome to BL Sign Language Society!
We are a new society at Barts and the London that aims to bring together students who want to learn British Sign Language (BSL). We aspire to increase awareness about the deaf and mute culture and better prepare BL students for interactions with such patients going forward.
We will offer lessons on BSL from fully qualified teachers as well as host events to promote deaf and mute culture. Get involved and join!
Aims:
- Raise awareness of deaf culture and sign language so that BLSA students are better able to communicate with deaf & mute patients
- Make sign language education more available for the students and have them certified in BSL
- To start a community of like-minded individuals in BL who want to learn BSL.

Sign Language Society Meet & Greet 2022/23: Come join us for a night filled with fun and educational activities!
Date: Thursday 6th October 2022
Time: 5.30 pm - 7 pm
Venue: BLSA Study Room
Introduction to BSL Course: This is a 10-week course taught by qualified Deaf tutors in partnership with Deaf Unity, which will be delivered every Monday in person across Semester 1. Students would receive a certificate upon completion if they attended at least 7 classes. More information about this course can be found here.
Date: Monday, 17th October 2022 (class commence), and classes will run every Monday.
Time: 6 pm - 8 pm
Venue: Whitechapel campus (BLSA Study Room and Garrod Building)
Level 1 BSL Course: This is a Signature accredited Level 1 BSL course, which is a 22-week course taught by qualified Deaf tutors in partnership with Deaf Unity. This course will be delivered online every Thursday across Semester 1 and 2, and students who have completed this course will receive a Level 1 qualification in Sign Language. Date: Thursday, 27th October 2022 (class commence), and classes will run every Thursday.

Past Events:
Introduction to Sign Language Society- Bi-weekly sign language classes from qualified deaf tutors in partnership with Deaf Unity. No prerequisites are required!
Afternoon Tea with British Sign Language- Learn and practice British Sign Language in Café Suvai while having tea, scones and snacks. No prerequisites are required!
Sign Christmas Social (08/12)- In partnership with UCL and KCL Sign Language Society, we will be organising a Sign Language Christmas Social at the North Cloisters (UCL main campus). There will be pizza, sign language and Christmas themed games, as well as music and decoration to celebrate Christmas.
Deaf Awareness Training (20/01)- Promoting inclusivity in our university and community by empowering hearing individuals to better communicate and understand the Deaf community.
