Building a Game

We know that creating a game can seem overwhelming or tricky to do so here's the list of areas that typically make up the production of a good game:

Game Design
  • Role: Defines the overall concept, mechanics, and gameplay. They ensure the game is fun and feasible within the game jam’s constraints.
  • Key Tasks: Designing core gameplay loops, deciding on game mechanics, balancing difficulty, and sometimes also working on level design.
Programming
  • Role: Implements the game mechanics and core functionality, ensuring everything works as intended.
  • Key Tasks: Writing the game code, integrating assets, fixing bugs, and optimizing performance. In small teams, they might also handle UI programming and gameplay logic.
Art and Animation
  • Role: Creates the visual elements of the game, including characters, environments, and UI elements.
  • Key Tasks: Making 2D/3D assets, animating characters or objects (if time allows), and defining the overall aesthetic or art style of the game.
Sound Design
  • Role: Adds audio elements like sound effects, music, and ambience to enhance the game’s experience.
  • Key Tasks: Creating or sourcing sound effects, composing background music, and ensuring audio is integrated correctly.
Product Management
  • Role: Keeps the team on track, ensuring the project scope is manageable and the game can be completed within the time limit.
  • Key Tasks: Managing tasks, setting deadlines, coordinating communication between team members, and keeping the project scope realistic.
Quality Assurance Testing
  • Role: Tests the game to find bugs, gameplay issues, or performance problems.
  • Key Tasks: Playing through the game at different stages, finding bugs or glitches, and ensuring it’s fun and functional.
