BL Surgical Society is the largest academic society at Barts, with a history dating back to 1749. We run loads of different events throughout the year for anyone interested in surgery, whether you’re already set on a specialty or just want to try something new.
We run teaching series across all of the different surgical specialties, careers talks with surgeons, hands-on surgical skills workshops, research opportunities and schemes, and sessions to help you build your surgical portfolio. You can come along to one event or get involved throughout the year. There’s no expectation that you need to be set on surgery.
We also run our International Surgical Conference in January, with talks, workshops and opportunities to meet surgeons and other students interested in surgery.
One of the things we’re particularly proud of is our da Vinci robotic surgery workshop. We’re currently the only medical student society in Europe to run a free workshop specifically for medical students using the da Vinci surgical robot, giving you the chance to actually get hands-on with robotic surgery.
With 50+ events every academic year, there’s bound to be something you’ll enjoy, whether that’s trying your first suturing workshop, learning about a specialty you’ve never considered, getting involved in research, or just coming along to see what surgery is all about.
And you definitely don’t need to know that you want to be a surgeon to join us.

Student membership is only £5. With most of our events being free for members, your membership can pay for itself after just one or two events.
