What is Liberation?
When we talk about liberation at QMSU, we mean activities and events put on by our students, staff and executive officers aiming to make a positive change for marginalised communities at QM. At the SU our values of inclusivity and to be student led drive our work, such as liberation where we strive for activities and events to celebrate and raise awareness of different communities as well as be led by our students for our students. Liberation is a collective effort we all do to support our diverse and varied community at QM.
To get involved, you could run an event, write an article or even get your society involved.To help give definition to liberation events, we have created a new definition for liberation at QMSU. This will help guide our liberation work going forward.
Liberation initiatives must meet all of the following criteria:

Directly linked to groups that face oppression or marginalisation either in the UK in general or at Queen Mary.

Aim to foster inclusion of all students and promote community cohesion.
✓
Create positive change through awareness raising, preventing misinformation or breaking down barriers.
✓
Open to all students regardless of whether they identify as part of a liberation group or not.
In addition to the criteria above, we encourage intersectional approaches, but this is not a requirement.
