Introducing Katila, a first-year PhD student in Clinical Neurology. She has kindly answered some questions about her research and experience at Queen Mary to give prospective and fellow students some top tips on postgraduate research. All part of our Postgraduate Spotlight series!
What is your research topic?
My research focuses on the perceptions of risk, benefit, and tolerance to risk among pregnant women with Multiple Sclerosis. Specifically, I am exploring perception of risk and tolerance to risk toward a particular group of MS treatments known as anti‑CD20 monoclonal antibodies.
What is your favorite thing about doing research at Queen Mary?
The research environment — especially having colleagues from all over the world and access to such a wealth of expertise. I’ve also valued the opportunities I’ve had to grow both as a researcher and as a person.
Where do you hope your research will take you in the future?
If possible, I would like to continue researching in the field of risk communication within Pharmacovigilance
Where is your favorite spot on campus, and why?
My favourite spot is the Charterhouse Square Campus lawn with all the flowers and beautiful trees in the autumn, is truly special. In the summer, is a very popular spot for lunch.
What has been your favorite part of the Students’ Union?
The Students Union’s are always organising events, the Mile End Campus is a hive of activity all year round, with all the facilities, like the Ground Coff, Student Union shops, etc. Every day is different and always very busy.
What is your go-to study tip for someone who may be struggling with productivity at a postgraduate level?
Access student services early — postgraduate study brings its own challenges. Many of us may be far from our families or juggling work, caring responsibilities, and study. QMUL has a range of resources and courses that can help you build productivity skills and find support when you need it.
Do you have any tips for anyone applying for a postgraduate course?
-
Never give up;
-
Try to enjoy the journey along the way
What is one piece of advice that you would give to a person who is soon starting their postgraduate study or research at Queen Mary?
Make the most of the opportunities at QMUL — meet new people, get involved, and immerse yourself in the community.
Thank you Katila for taking part! Good luck with the future of your research.
