The ongoing crisis in Palestine and Israel has been one that has concerned many of us. The incoming reports on the tragic loss of life in the run-up to and in recent days have horrified us all at the Students' Union and our communities on campus.

Whilst we know our statement cannot directly influence the current situation, we join the call for the bloodshed to cease, for international law to be adhered to, and for those in power to facilitate this.

Differing views on the fighting, its causes and implications will exist. However, we urge everyone to remember that real people are affected behind the headlines, including their families and friends here at our university.

Our campus must be a safe space for all, and we ask everyone to treat each other with the kindness and mutual respect our community is known for.

Unfortunately, we know that hate crimes have risen nationally, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. We will not tolerate bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence in our student spaces, in-person or online. The Students' Union will support any student impacted by such behaviours.

The Students' Union is here for you. Please do reach out if you need our help.

From your Executive Officer team
