Did you know that 80% of children living in orphanages have one or more living parent? QMSU Volunteering are supporting the Better Volunteering Better Care campaign to stop orphanage volunteering.

Although many students consider volunteering abroad in an orphanage out of a desire to make a difference, this type of volunteering can harm children and communities in numerous ways and is often bad for volunteers. To read about the dangers of orphanage volunteering search #StopOrphanTrips on Twitter or have a look at this video from the Better Volunteering Better Care website.

Bronwen Estaugh, QMSU Volunteering Coordinator, commented:

“We believe that international volunteering can be powerfully positive if done properly. We encourage all students or staff considering volunteering abroad to read our ‘Guide to Volunteering Abroad’, which offers some guidance on how to choose a project that will be ethical and have a positive impact.”

If you’re a student and feel passionate about this cause, please sign the petition calling for an end to orphanage volunteering.

This pledge has been designed with QMSU Volunteering partners at the Better Volunteering, Better Care group, of which QMSU Volunteering is a supporting member.
