Queen Mary Student Wins National Award for Community Impact

Gowri Promy has been named the Community Impact Award Winner at the #WeAreInternational Awards 2025.

We're really proud to celebrate Gowri Promy, who has been named the Community Impact Award Winner at the #WeAreInternational Awards 2025.

This year’s awards recognised 13 outstanding students, staff and institutions from across the UK, chosen from over 420 entries submitted by more than 120 universities. From this incredibly competitive field, 63 finalists were shortlisted before expert judges selected the 2025 winners, making Gowri’s achievement especially amazing.

An international student at Queen Mary, Gowri has made a profound contribution to the East London community through her volunteer work, advocacy, and commitment to social justice. Her dedication has had a tangible, lasting impact on both local organisations and fellow students.

As President of QMUL’s Lawyers Without Borders, Gowri has transformed the society into a dynamic platform that goes far beyond student learning. Under her leadership, the society now actively connects Queen Mary students with local charities, community groups, and global human rights initiatives. Her work has created new opportunities for students to engage with real-world advocacy and contribute meaningfully to the wider community.

Gowri’s recognition in the #WeAreInternational Awards reflects not only her passion and resilience, but also the strength of Queen Mary’s diverse and socially engaged international student community. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and the example she sets for students across the university and beyond.

Congratulations, Gowri - a truly inspiring winner.

In addition to Gowri, we'd like to recognise and applaud our additional Queen Mary finalists, including:

Outstanding Student Support Award (Making a Home in the UK) – Advice and Counselling Service and Careers Service
Community Impact Award – Gowri Promy and Diya Mary Selastin
Staff of the Year Award – Rachel Hacking
Student of the Year Award – Mahima Grover

These shortlists highlight the dedication of our staff and students in creating a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment for our global community. Queen Mary was the most nominated university of the evening, which truly shows the community spirit our students have!
