The 2020/21 academic year has brought a number of different obstacles to us all and sport is no different. We have created a page where you can safely access sport, physical activity and wellbeing activities from the safe spaces you have available to you.

Sport and physical activity have proven benefits to your physical and mental wellbeing, and it has the capacity to help you succeed and stay motivated and focused during your time at Queen Mary. We encourage you to adopt these activities as part of a healthy, regular routine to give yourself the best chance of success and to feel the benefits.

The landscape of local, national and international guidance on Covid-19 is ever changing so it is vitally important that you keep yourself up to date with the latest government guidelines. By taking part in these activities, you agree to adhere to the latest government guidelines at all times. We all have a responsibility to look after ourselves and each other and it is important we do just that.

We hope you find some activities and events that work for you and we encourage you to try something new. As the guidance changes, so will our offer, so keep your eye out for new opportunities. Enjoy!

Participants should not attend any of QMSU Sport’s activities if they are showing Covid-19 symptoms, have tested positive for Covid-19, or have been in close contact with someone who has.

Some of our fantastic clubs have out together sport specific sessions for you to get involved in through live and pre-recorded sessions. Many of these are led by the club and/or professional, qualified coaches. It’s a great way to try something new or look to improve your skills and knowledge of a sport.

If you like these sessions, there are of course opportunities for you to get involved in these clubs face to face once restrictions allow us to do so.

All sessions are free, so do take advantage of them.


Boat Club

  • Every Wednesday 5pm-5:45pm
  • All abilities welcome

These sessions will consist of a Zoom circuit workout open to all students, staff and alumni and is completely free. These sessions will give you a chance to keep active and meet some new people!! Song requests for sessions welcome.

This class will give you the basic skills to start your journey in Hip Hop and hopefully spark an interest in getting involved with dance in the future! Tickets for the class are £10 for the whole semester.

QMBL Women’s Basketball

Join QMBL Women’s Basketball for a fitness and yoga session! These sessions will consist of a mix of fitness and yoga to get you active and get your heart pumping but also build strength and get a good stretch at the same time (perfect for when you are sat at your desk all day!). These sessions will give you a chance to keep active and meet some new people!! It is completely free and all genders are welcome.

Welcome to the Personal and Professional Development (PPD) area. We have put together a programme of events, activities and courses for you to utilise and expand you knowledge, understanding, skills and knowledge. Many of these courses are run by the Students’ Union, however we have signed up to a few external organisations who are delivering excellent work in this area.


Community Foundation Training Opportunities

Duration: Less than 30 minutes

The Community Foundation’s Leadership Academy offers a number of training sessions. You will be required to complete a short assessment with the support of a presentation video and supplementary resources. You can express your interest via our Training Menu.

  • Five Pillars of Duty to Care: Safeguarding: Earn a UK Coaching digital badge by completing five knowledge checks on safeguarding and protecting people from harmful practice in sport and physical activity.

Other external sessions through the Community Foundation
  • Social Action in Community Spaces: This certified course by Young Citizens is an introduction to using social action to improve community spaces. It supports anyone working with young people to make positive changes to the places where they live.
  • ReActivate Training (Covid-19): CIMSPA and Sport England have launched this training to give you confidence about returning safely to sport and physical activity, and getting back to providing a valuable service to the community.
  • Street Games: European Youth Health Champions: A 6-module, interactive e-learning course offered by StreetGames to develop the skills needed to help others make healthy life choices.
  • Street Games: European Us Girls: A 6-module, video-based e-learning course offered by StreetGames to develop knowledge around female volunteering and peer leadership.

Get moving with the Students’ Union’s live weekly fitness sessions. All activities are delivered by our professional instructors to a screen near you! What’s more all sessions are free!

We will be offering a number of different courses for you to get involved with to help you build your fitness, wellbeing, skills and knowledge.


Couch to 5K (Current course)
  • Level: Beginner
  • Duration: 9 weeks
  • Frequency: 3 walks / runs
  • Start Date: Monday 8th March

We will be getting the Queen Mary community active with our online couch to 5k course. This course is designed for people who are brand new to running, want to get back into running or just want to get active again or for the first time. We will be creating a Queen Mary community, sharing stories, pictures, Strava Kudos and encouragement along the way.

What will you achieve? You will be able to independently and confidently run 5k non-stop once you complete the course. You will then be able to build upon the great work you have achieved and look to build speed and distance, or you can carry on running 5k runs at your own pace.

If you’re new to East London, you might not know where to start for nice places to get out for your daily exercises. We have listed some great spots for you to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in nature, find a peaceful spot or just enjoy a leisurely stroll away from your room.

This Girl Can: Inspirational Women in Sport Talk

The purpose of this talk is to highlight the different opportunities, struggles and triumphs that women can face, tackle and achieve throughout their involvement in sport. We want to inspire and empower other women to take action, to get involved and to flourish in the modern sporting landscape and we hope you all take something from hearing our speakers stories.

Speakers include:

How do I join a the community?

Log in/create an account on the Playwaze app or website. If you already have a BUCS Play account, please log in with these details.

Under 'Find my Community' type in Exercise & Reward Community & the QM Halls Community will appear - click on the tab to enter the community.


How do I log my activity?

The app will track your points as you take part in each activity. Your points will be displayed on your Playwaze profile.


How many points do I get per activity?

Each activity is worth 10 points.


How do I claim my prize?

Once you have reached your activity milestone, its time to claim your free prize - The app will notify you when you have achieved your goal.

Bring evidence of your points (either your app or a screen shot of your website points profile) and your student ID and your Residents' Rewards Card to reception in any of the below locations:

  • France House (Mile End residents) - Monday to Friday between 14:00 - 18:00.
  • Aspire Point Reception - Monday to Friday between 08:00 - 17:00.
  • Sherren House Reception - Monday to Thursday 12:00 - 20:00 & Friday between 10:00 - 18:00.
  • Students living at Dawson Hall and Floyer House should email residential-support@qmul.ac.uk to arrange a collection time from the foyer of your building.

This programme of activities is a joint venture delivered by Residential Support and Queen Mary Students Union. We have received funding from British University and College Sport (BUCS) and Sport England to run this project.
