Talented Athlete Programme

The Students’ Union Talented Athlete Programme aims to support high performing athletes who are studying for a world class degree at Queen Mary. We will offer support to each athlete to achieve the degree and performance goals whilst at Queen Mary.

The focus will be on athlete wellbeing and empowering athletes to steer their own dual career aspirations.


Aims:
  • Prioritise athlete’s wellbeing
  • Support towards dual career aspirations
  • Supporting athletes to get a degree result they have aimed for
  • Support towards performance targets
  • Raising awareness of the programme through BUCS points and status of athletes

Athletes who are accepted on the programme will have access to the below:

  • Monthly catch up meetings for student athletes on the programme
  • Annual Gym Membership
  • Athlete Kit
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Collaborative work with your coaches
  • Work with your academic departments (Dual career support)
  • Signposting to anything we cannot support you with
Alexandra Oprisan

Sport: Badminton

Course: Computer Science with Management (ITMB)

Highest Achievement: Semi-finals of senior Nationals and quarter finals of Cyprus international.


Connie Hayes

Sport: Cycling

Course: Human Geography

Highest Achievement: 16th at the elite national road circuit championships, 11th at national TT championships., 78th GP Iseburge international., 48th stage 1 tour de belle isle (pro uci race) and 18th in the Bristol GP elite national series.


Emily Goodchild

Sport: Fencing

Course: Phd in Endocrinology

Highest Achievement: Top 8 finish at Antalya International Satellite competition. Current ranking 12.


Georgia Silk

Sport: Fencing

Course: Mathematics

Highest Achievement: Currently ranked 3rd in Under 20s and 5th in Britain for all ages. Best achievements is 1st at the Newham National under 20 competition, 20th at the Copenhagen Senior International and 29th at the Zagreb World Cup.


James Moreby

Sport: Chess

Course: Software Engineering

Highest Achievement: UK U21 No.1, Top 30 UK All Ages.

We are looking to support student athletes who can compete at the Olympic or Paralympic Games, typically those that have already represented their country at senior international level.

We will also consider applications from student athletes competing at a minimum of junior national/international level or equivalent. And Student athletes who compete in a non-Olympic sport, providing they compete at a comparable level and in a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) sport.

Each application will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
