Become a Welcome Crew Volunteer

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us run Welcome Week 2023. The Welcome Crew and Help Squad are teams of students who are vital in making Welcome Week one to remember for everyone involved.

Welcome Crew are based at Mile End campus while BLSA Help Squad are based at the Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square campuses.

Welcome Crew volunteer role

(Mile End)

Welcome Crew are a group of student volunteers that provide information and assistance to first year students during Arrivals Weekend and Welcome Week.

They help new students move into halls, assist at events including the Welcome Fair, provide information on University and Students' Union services and activities, and most importantly make every new student feel welcome at Queen Mary.

Some of the skills we require from Welcome Crew Volunteers include enthusiasm, dedication, communication, problem-solving and time management.

Dependant on how many hours and shifts you volunteer, the benefits of taking part as a Welcome Crew Volunteer include:

  • Free refreshments whilst you're volunteering
  • Free entry to Students' Union events, dependent on hours volunteered
  • An opportunity to develop and use your teamwork, time management, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Students' Union Crew hoody and t-shirt
  • Meeting lots of new people and having fun
  • Anything else we can get our hands on!

To be considered as a Welcome Crew Volunteer, you will need to be available for:

  • A compulsory training session on Wednesday 13th September at 4-6pm in the Blomeley Rooms, Students' Union Hub.
  • Shifts on Arrivals Weekend Friday 15th - Sunday 17th September and selected shifts during Welcome Week Monday 18th September to Sunday 24th September.

Help Squad volunteer role

(Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square)

Help Squad are a group of student volunteers that provide information and assistance to first year students during Welcome Week.

They help new students move into halls, assist at events such as the Freshers' Fair, provide information on University and BLSA services and activities, and most importantly make every new student feel welcome at Queen Mary and Barts and The London.

Some of the skills we require from Help Squad Volunteers include enthusiasm, dedication, communication, problem-solving and time management.

Dependant on how many hours and shifts you volunteer, the benefits of taking part as a Help Squad Volunteer include:

  • Free refreshments during shifts
  • Free entry to Students' Union events dependent on hours volunteered
  • An opportunity to develop and use your teamwork, time management, communication, guiding and problem-solving skills
  • BLSA Help Squad hoody and t-shirt
  • Meeting lots of new people and having fun
  • Anything else we can get our hands on!

To be considered as a BLSA Help Squad Volunteer, you will need to be available for:

  • A compulsory training evening week commencing Monday 13th September at 4-6pm in the Blomeley Rooms, Students' Union Hub.
  • Shifts during Arrivals Weekend on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September, timings TBC
  • Shifts during Welcome Week from Monday 18th September to Sunday 24th September
