Rob for BLSA President:
My Experience:
  • 3rd Year Medical Student
  • BL LGBT+ Welfare Rep 2020/21
  • BLSA Board, Student Council, Welfare Board, BL Welfare Zone & Communities Board 2020/21
  • SMD EDI (Equality Diversity Inclusion) Network Representative 2020/21
  • Involved in many societies, and several committee roles

 

Welfare:
  • Promote the new government hardship funding so it is fairly allocated to students.
  • Create a unified system for welfare forums associated with liberation groups & provide more support on welfare events.
  • Improve student’s uptake and awareness of Report & Support for campus issues.
  • Work to get Raising Concerns up & running for professionalism issues on placement.
  • Provide mental health first aid training to all board reps.
  • Create a stronger mummies & daddies matching system.
  • Increase accessibility & understanding of student support services.

 

Sustainability:
  • Support the new BL sustainability rep to ensure QMUL seriously considers recycling capabilities on campus.
  • Create more sustainable food options in The Griff.
  • Develop more student education on green issues.
  • Ensure a yearly BL environmental themed week.

 

Education:
  • Lobby the university to decide on MBBS progress tests or ICAs based on student feedback.
  • Support restarting our Global Health BSc course.
  • Provide more support in the SU for intercalation.
  • Promote safe face-to-face teaching, taking what we’ve learned works and what doesn’t from digital teaching.
  • Keep pushing for student input into the graduate 2025 curriculum.
  • Enhance the careers service increasing information relevant to medics, dentists & allied course students.
  • Keep up to date tracking UKMLA developments so students aren’t disadvantaged when it’s introduced.
  • Improve lecturers understanding of QReview’s benefit, especially in allied courses where it is the least accessible.
  • Enhance SSLC communication for all courses to the SU to improve on academic issues raised by students & staff.
  • Campaign the university to make up for lost teaching due to lack of lectures & placements during COVID.

 

Community:
  • Improve communication to students about what is happening in BLSA, such as by publishing meeting minutes.
  • Promote increasing diversity on SU boards & within higher positions at QMUL.
  • Lobby to continue preventing rising international tuition fees.
  • Protect Friday hour prayer time, with adequate university space for this.
  • Ensure any facilities that change are replaced like-for-like or better than they currently are, ensuring changes are discussed with students.
  • Lobby against the loss of the Barts & The London branding and heritage.
  • Make student safety & well-being our top priorities on student’s return to campus.
  • Improve course rep communication to students for more accurate student feedback.
  • Ensure we are celebrating students’ achievements regularly on social media.

 

Societies & Sports:
  • Strengthen the welfare officer position in societies & sports clubs by providing useful training.
  • Create handover style documents for new society & sports committees.
  • Work to make it easier for events to be streamed & uploaded so students have the option to watch them later.
  • Create better support structures for sports club presidents & captains in the SU.
  • Work on more ways to encourage students to get as involved as possible in sports & exercise.
  • Work to return funding to Merger cup, with a date that suits all students.

 

Events:
  • Create resources available to students on how to run events with the SU’s help.
  • Reintroduce SU events that students want safely.
  • Expand alcohol-free events.
  • Publicising a more streamlined outlet for student groups to advertise events & a comprehensive calendar for these.
