Applying to the US shouldn't have to feel like a leap of faith!

My name is Adrian, and I’m a current 4th year medical student from Hong Kong. Since I discovered my desire to train in the U.S., BL US society had played an important role in my journey. From informative talks about the USMLE to opportunities to get connected to UK trained doctors who have made successful applications to the US, the society had aided me massively in what is, and continues to be, a very challenging journey. I wish to help provide the same to others as the society has done for me and continue to actively involve myself in the society. That is why I will be running for the General Secretary position for 2022-23.

I wish to continue the work of the society to provide students in Barts a space for professional development in the States. As someone who is currently going through the journey to apply for U.S. training, the journey can be incredibly intimidating and lonesome in my experience. As a result, a comfortable space for like-minded students hoping to apply for the U.S. is not only instrumental in the provision of information and education about the U.S. system and application path, but also in the provision of support and motivation for such a difficult path. Furthermore, I believe the society can play a more active role in supporting Barts students in studying for the USMLE and securing clinical internships. An open drive with USMLE learning resources and shared subscriptions would be very helpful, as well as possibly utilising existing connections the society has with US doctors to facilitate for U.S. based sub-internships.

I believe my skills and personality are well-suited for the role of General Secretary. For example, I acted as President of QMBL ABACUS society, a large cultural society at Queen Mary. During my term, I oversaw the operations of the society and was responsible for organising numerous large-scale social events. Furthermore, I was responsible for liaising with other ABACUS societies in other London universities. From these experiences, I was able to actively apply and hone my planning and organisation skills, in conjunction with leadership and interpersonal skills. Having also been on the sub-committee for UCL HKPASS society, as well as the committee in a non-profit club during sixth form, I believe I will be able to communicate and work effectively with the rest of the BL US committee, while also being approachable to other students.

I hope I will have your vote for General Secretary for the upcoming year!
